What To See

Orroli and Surroundings

Nuraghe Arrubiu

Orroli is home to over 40 nuraghi. The most significant is undoubtedly Nuraghe Arrubiu (red nuraghe in Sardinian), a nuragic complex dating back to 1500 B.C.

It's the largest and most complex nuraghe in Sardinia and one of the major prehistoric monuments in Western Europe, hence its nickname "The Red Giant."

A visit to Orroli is incomplete without seeing it.

Guided tours are available in both Italian and English. It may be hot in August, but the nuraghe maintains a stable temperature, offering some cool areas :)

Domus De Janas

The Domus De Janas are burial structures carved into rock in various shapes.

Located in the Su Motti park, they require some exploration but are fascinating to see.

S’Impiccu

In Piazza Caduti, you can see S’Arcu de S’Impiccu, where death sentences were carried out until 1825.

Churches

Orroli has four churches dedicated to its most venerated saints:

  • San Vincenzo Martire (1582, renovated and expanded in 1900)

  • Saint Nicholas (1000)

  • Saint Vincent Ferrer

  • Saint Catherine of Alexandria

The Lakes

Do not swim!

Flumendosa

For a summer sunbath and a lovely walk, head down to Lake Flumendosa. The view is breathtaking, and you don't have to go all the way down to appreciate the lake.

From Orroli, take the exit towards Escalaplano. After leaving the town, take the second road on the left (signposted for Hotel Castellinaria) and continue straight for about 4-5 minutes on a narrow two-way road.

You'll pass a turnoff for Hotel Castellinaria (currently closed) and continue straight.

Mulargia

Lake Mulargia is a vital source of drinking and irrigation water for the Campidano plain.

You can view it when arriving in Orroli from Cagliari or when heading towards Escalaplano. Get a closer look by going down to the former restaurant Su Bandidu.

Cagliari

Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, is a beautiful city with many historical buildings and shopping streets.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Bonaria, dedicated to Sardinia's principal patron saint, is a must-visit. It's not only a magnificent church but also a great opportunity to pay respects to our patroness.

Read more about it here

Cagliari is also excellent for shopping. The area around Via Roma, Piazza Yenne, Corso Vittorio Emmanuele, and Via Manno is filled with countless shops, restaurants, etc., perfect for strolling, shopping, and enjoying a delicious meal.

Beaches

We know that summer visitors to Sardinia want to hit the beach, and there's something for everyone!

Villlaputzu

For a day trip from Orroli, try Villaputzu/Muravera for quiet, less crowded, and less touristy beaches.

Villasimius

If you have more time and want to stay at the beach for a few days, the area around Villasimius is beautiful! You can easily reach beaches like Porto Giunco by car, although they tend to be crowded.

Baunei

For the adventurous and hiking enthusiasts, the Baunei area is special.

Some beaches are accessible by car, but most coves can only be reached on foot or by boat. Famous ones include Cala Goloritzé, Cala Mariolu, and Cala Luna. The Selvaggio Blu in this area is considered the most challenging trek in Italy due to its length, isolation, and technical difficulties. Over 5 days, you'll trek, climb, and rappel along a wild and stunning stretch of the Sardinian coast, accompanied by the sea's magical blue color. If you go to Baunei, definitely take a rubber dinghy tour to see some of the clearest and most transparent waters you'll ever witness.

The list of questions will be continually updated based on the requests we receive.

For Americans and EU citizens, no! As indicated in the link below, no visa or visa waiver is required to enter the EU (until January 2025!) for American citizens.

Are you renting a bus for us?

In order to get to Orroli, a car is needed, since we have people coming from all over the world and flights will arrive at different times.

Once in Orroli, everyone will have a car and it would be pointless for us to plan a bus.

Is there something planned for Friday night?

No.

It is not traditional in Sardinia to have a rehearsal dinner and we decided not to have one.

What is the best way to travel in Sardinia?

Car is the best way. There is public transportation in the major cities, but the smaller towns like Orroli and Barumini require a car to get to.

NOTE: In order to drive in Orroli, you MUST have an international license. Please see this link for a guide in how to obtain one: https://www.aaa.com/vacation/idpf.html
